Champ's Brew Hits the Road!

Champ’s Brew Hits the Road!
During the renovation of the former gymnasium at Rolla High School, which transformed the space into a beautiful performing arts center, there was much discussion about what to do with the old concession stand in the upper commons area. Just before the 2024-25 school year began, the Life Skills class, led by Mrs. Julie Pratt, Mrs. Stephanie Bell, and Mr. Brian Owens, saw this as a perfect opportunity to request that the space be turned into a coffee shop. Their request was granted, and "Champ's Brew" quickly became a fan-favorite feature at RHS for staff and students.
Each morning and afternoon, Life Skills students open the shop, prepare coffees, frappes, smoothies, and offer snacks as students and staff line up to make their purchases. The shop gained momentum over the first two school years, resulting in a very healthy bottom line. The successful rollout of the shop prompted the idea of “Champ’s Brew: Phase Two”, where the team will take their show on the road…literally! Using the profits from the shop, along with generous donations from Hutcheson Ford and Lacie’s Haven, and ongoing support from Tri-County Center for Independent Living, The Champ’s Brew crew purchased a van. The coffee van will allow students to interact with various groups around the community and practice their service and organization skills in a different environment.
“The kids have really grown. We’ve watched them mature through this process. They learn money skills, social skills, and work skills,” said Mrs. Bell. Mrs. Pratt agreed. “After working in the shop, students are better equipped to get jobs and help out at home. It’s been amazing to watch.”
Dr. Corey Ray, RHS Principal, shared his gratitude for the program and those who run it. “We live in the most supportive community you can find. They help us prepare all our kids to be college or career-ready. Champ’s Brew is a vehicle to make that happen for our students with special needs. I appreciate the teachers who put their hearts and souls into this project, making a positive impact on our school community.”
